(Reuters) – CAIRO Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed on “the immediate start of upgrading diplomatic relations, exchanging ambassadors,” according to a statement issued by Egypt’s government on Monday.
Sisi called Erdogan to congratulate him on his presidential victory.
Egypt’s foreign minister, Sameh Shoukry, visited Turkey in April and met with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu; the two sides agreed on a timetable to improve diplomatic relations and prepare for a summit between the two presidents.
Cavusoglu said in April that the presidents may meet again following Turkey’s May 14 election.
