LAHORE (Politico.pk) – Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has been chosen as speaker of the Punjab Assembly, with Malik Zaheer Iqbal Channer serving as deputy speaker.

Malik Ahmad Khan won 224 votes, beating Sunni Ittehad Council candidate Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar, who received just 96 votes.

Similarly, Malik Zaheer Iqbal Channer received 220 votes, outperforming Sunni Ittehad Council’s Moeen Riaz, who received 103 votes.

Voting Process

The election included three polling booths, and 324 MPs from both the treasury and opposition benches cast secret ballots.

Swearing-in ceremony
Following the announcement of results, outgoing speaker Sibtain Khan administered the oath to Malik Ahmad Khan as his successor.

PML-N Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz congratulated Malik Ahmad Khan on his victory, with PML-N lawmakers expressing their jubilation with cheers and chants.

After his swearing-in, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan presided over the assembly’s remaining proceedings and conducted the election for the deputy speaker position.

The inaugural session
The opening session, which had been planned for 4:00 p.m., began one and a half hours late. When chief minister-designate Maryam Nawaz arrived in the House, legislators from the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) [which includes PTI-backed MPAs] erupted in chants against PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif. In response, PML-N MPs chanted chants against the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

The current session will resume on Monday, February 26, at 11:00 a.m.

Nominations for the position of Punjab Chief Minister.

The nomination papers for the job of Punjab Chief Minister will be received by 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, with examination finished by 5:10 p.m.
