ISLAMABAD ( Politico.pk)- After a lengthy wait, the National Assembly has finally nominated an opposition leader, with NA Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq releasing a notification nominating Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai to the role.
NA Speaker Sadiq confirmed Achakzai’s appointment as Leader of the Opposition and summoned PTI’s Amir Dogar to his chambers to deliver the notification.
Tariq Fazal Chaudhry stated that there had been a two-day break between sittings and that attendance was fewer than usual, asking that the Question Hour be rescheduled. Sadiq stated that there would be no Question Hour today and that because members had worked hard, he would not postpone the proceedings.
Barrister Gohar, the PTI head, claimed he learnt the day before yesterday that a single PTCL meeting earns $8,000. He said that the Speaker had previously stated that the notification will be sent on Thursday. In response, the Speaker stated that he would submit the House business to the committees, return to his chamber, and then make the notification.
Barrister Gohar further stated that in neighboring India, assembly procedures run at least six hours. Tariq Fazal said that attendance in the House was significantly lower than average.
Several bills were presented in the National Assembly during the session, including the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council Ordinance, Railways Transfer (Amendment) Ordinance, National Tariff Commission (Amendment) Bill, Export Development Fund (Amendment) Bill, Export-Import Bank of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2026, Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Amendment Bill, Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (Amendment) Bill, Alternative Dispute Resolution
Azam Nazeer Tarar, the law minister, introduced all of these measures.
Furthermore, the Speaker prohibited 32 members from joining the House for failing to disclose their assets to the Election Commission. He commanded that members who had not made asset declarations be deemed absent, and that any such member remaining in the House should depart on their own, as the list was accessible for them to verify their identities.
