KARACHI : Ali Zaidi, the head of Imran Khan’s party’s Sindh chapter, announced on Saturday his resignation from all party posts in response to the violent demonstrations of May 9. This was another setback for the former prime minister.

The former federal minister for marine issued a video statement denouncing the vandalism on May 9 and announcing his decision to leave politics and all party roles.

“I entered politics to support Pakistan. I once again denounce the events on May 9,” he stated. He praised the military, saying, “The armed forces are the pride of Pakistan and we sleep peacefully because of them as they protect our borders.”

All individuals responsible for the violence, he stated, should be brought to justice. Mr. Zaidi acknowledged that his choice to leave politics was difficult but said that he had made an effort to serve the nation.

After Mr. Khan was taken into custody from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) grounds in the Al-Qadir Trust case on May 9, violent demonstrations broke out.

In retaliation for the PTI leader’s detention, his party members destroyed a dozen military facilities, including the Mianwali airfield and the Lahore Corps Commander’s House.

The crowd also invaded the Army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi for the first time, which was strongly denounced by the nation’s political and military authorities.

Following the incident, which the Pakistan Army and governing coalition referred to as a “dark day” in the nation’s history, thousands of PTI supporters were detained.

A day earlier, Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar, a former federal minister and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), announced his resignation from the party due to the chaos on May 9.
