KARACHI : Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, the convener of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), expressed alarm on Wednesday about the approaching elections for the Karachi local government, alleging that there had been pre-election fraud.

Speaking at a news conference, Mr. Maqboo claimed there was uncertainty in the voter list that had been created and added that they weren’t pleased with the delimitation problem. He was joined by Jamaat-i-Islami city president Hafiz Naeemur Rehman. According to Mr. Maqbool, the numbers’ ambiguity indicated that pre-poll manipulation had already occurred.

While the JI city chairman said that his party wants Karachiites to serve as mayor and council members of their own city due to the rulers’ decades-long neglect of the city of lights. The Local Government Act was established in 2013, but we haven’t been able to have elections yet, the speaker said, adding that Pakistan’s citizens didn’t have an equal playing field.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was encouraged by Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori earlier on January 2 to keep its commitment on delimitations for Karachi’s future. Speaking to reporters, MQM-Kamran P’s Tessori said that the party’s largest concern was the matter of missing individuals, which could only be resolved by joining the previous administration. He hoped that the current administration will not let them down.

The governor said that the “city of lights” was turning into a “city of criminals” and vowed to stop it. He said, “Nobody is Karachi’s buddy, but the port city has always been kind to outsiders. He said that the city was crumbling and that the systems for education, sewage, gas, electricity, and water were in ruins. The MQM-P leader cautioned that the individuals in authority would be accountable for economic instability if the proper choices were not made.

The governor further said that he discussed delimitations with Bilawal Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari and told them that keeping the present delimitations would be unfair to the residents of the city.

A day ago, Mr. Tessori emphasised the need for agreement and said that all political parties should cooperate for the sake of the nation since hypocrisy was no longer acceptable.

He said that the MQM-P had voiced its concerns to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and that he had promised to discuss them with Asif Ali Zardari and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

Tessori said, “Balighur Rehman, the governor of Punjab, and Parvez Elahi, the chief minister, attended the sessions. I have prayed for both Lahore and Karachi.”
