Putin made a “huge mistake” in invading Ukraine, according to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

As leaders gathered to discuss modernising the alliance’s eastern defences, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of committing a “big mistake” by invading Ukraine.

“President Putin has made a major blunder by declaring war on an independent sovereign nation. He has grossly underestimated the Ukrainian people’s power, bravery, and armed forces “Ahead of a NATO meeting in Brussels, Stoltenberg remarked.

The leaders of the US-led military alliance, according to Stoltenberg, will “discuss the need for a longer-term reset of our deterrence and defence,” beginning with fresh deployments to eastern members Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Bulgaria.

In the aftermath of Russia’s incursion, NATO has already sent tens of thousands of troops to its eastern flank to prevent the crisis from spilling over into member countries.

In a video speech to leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose nation is not a member of NATO, is expected to call for more weaponry and stronger intervention in an attempt to persuade the West to take a tougher stance.
