ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary-General Asad Umar has been arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The FIA’s counter-terrorism wing had lodged the case against the former prime minister, who was forced from power in April last year following a no-confidence motion, after determining his willful involvement in abusing the sensitive material following an investigation.

Former federal minister Asad Umar was arrested in Islamabad in connection with the cipher inquiry.

Earlier, former foreign minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) deputy chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi was detained at his home in Islamabad.

PTI deputy chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi was detained and taken to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) headquarters in connection with the Cypher case.

It is worth noting that Azam Khan, the ex-principal secretary to the PTI chairman and former prime minister, made shocking admissions, claiming that the former PM utilized US cypher for ‘political benefits’ and to avoid a no-confidence move against him.

Khan, who had previously been “missing” for months, unexpectedly returned on the scene and made astonishing allegations regarding US cypher while making his testimony before a court under CrPC 164.

An alleged tape of ex-PM and his aide Azam Khan discussing US cypher, which the PTI chairman said contributed to the collapse of his administration, was released on September 28, last year.

Azam Khan may be heard in the reported discussion notifying former Prime Minister Khan about the contentious diplomatic cable.
