ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Web Desk) – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) postponed the indictment of the PTI Chairman for contempt of the electoral watchdog and the chief election commissioner (CEC) until August 2.
The case was heard by a four-person court led by member Nisar Durrani. The PTI leader appeared before the electoral commission for the first time since the case was opened in October of last year.
The ECP has requested that the former prime minister be arrested and brought before the electoral commission.
Last year, the ECP charged the PTI head, party leader Asad Umar, and former information minister Fawad Chaudhry with contempt of court for allegedly using ‘intemperate’ language against the CEC and the election body.
In several high courts, the three had fought the ECP notices and contempt actions. The Supreme Court granted the ECP permission to resume proceedings against PTI head Chaudhry and Umar in January.
They did not appear before the commission on July 11 despite being summons, therefore the ECP issued arrest warrants for Chaudhry and the PTI head.
As the PTI head came before the commission, a member of the ECP bench announced that the former prime minister will be indicted in the case today.
However, the PTI chief’s attorney asked that the hearing be postponed because he required more time to assemble the case record.
As a result, the watchdog accepted the counsel’s plea and rescheduled the indictment for August 2. It also ordered the PTI chairman to be present at the next hearing.
