ISLAMABAD (POLITICO.PK) – Monday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued notices to parties in a plea filed by Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the leader of the Awami Muslim League (AML), seeking post-arrest bail in a case involving claims of a murder plot against former president Asif Ali Zardari.

The petition was heard by IHC Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, while Advocate Salman Akram Raja defended the former interior minister in the case. Mr. Raja asked the court to schedule the next hearing as soon as possible, citing the petitioner’s advanced age.

The court sent notifications to the Islamabad police and the plaintiff in the case, requesting responses by February 16, when the bail motion will be reconsidered.

Mr. Ahmed filed a bail petition with the high court on February 10 after a judicial magistrate and the district and sessions courts denied his request. Mr. Ahmed stated that the lawsuit filed against him was motivated by politics. According to him, the investigation was opened based on a complaint from a third party.

The veteran lawmaker begged with the court to release him on bail, stating he was willing to post surety bonds.

The Islamabad police detained the former interior minister on February 2 after a charge was made against him at the Aabpara police station for accusing the PPP co-chairman of plotting the assassination of PTI Chairman Imran Khan. After his arrest, a judge granted his two-day physical remand and then ordered him on 14-day judicial detention.

The court in Islamabad delivers Sheikh Rashid to the police in Murree.

Sheikh Rashid is now jailed at the Adiala Jail after a judge in Islamabad accepted his 14-day judicial detention in connection with the Zaradri comments case.
