ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has issued show-cause summons to 14 dissident legislators in the wake of the opposition submitting a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The notifications were issued to Raja Riaz, Dr. Muhammad Afzal Khan, Nawab Sher, Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon, Ahmed Hussain Deharr, Abdul Ghafar Wattoo, and Noor Alam Khan, members of the National Assembly (MNA).
The lawmakers have been given seven days to submit an unqualified apology and rejoin the party, or else legal action would be taken against them.
Prime Minister Imran Khan, on the other hand, has labelled the dissidents as traitors and stated that he would not be blackmailed.
Despite the opposition’s move, the premier stated that the no-confidence vote had been defeated.
It is worth noting that the opposition is attempting to oust Khan after gathering thousands of people on a campaign alleging that he has mishandled the economy, governance, and foreign policy.
No Pakistani prime minister has ever served his whole tenure.
The combined opposition is made up of major parties such as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) – founded by former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto – and has almost 163 seats in the lower house.
It needs a simple majority of 172 to prevail in the no-confidence vote.
