MULTAN (Politico.pk): With four days left to rule on candidate appeals against rejections or acceptances of nomination papers by returning officers, appellate tribunals decided additional appeals on Saturday, allowing several candidates to run in elections.
An electoral tribunal in Multan denied PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s request to run in NA 150, 151, and two provincial assembly constituencies, PP 218 and 219. The former foreign minister has filed an appeal against the verdict of the RO. The ruling was announced by Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar.
However, Zain Qureshi and Mehr Bano Qureshi were permitted to run for PP 219 seats.
PTI’s Asad Qaiser has been granted permission to contest for election in NA 19 and PK 50, while Taimur Jhagra has been authorized to vote.
A panel ruled that Fawad Chaudhry’s wife, Hiba Chaudhry, was unqualified to run for a provincial assembly seat.
The electoral tribunal granted the PTI’s Subhan Sahil and Amjad Afridi’s petitions, allowing them to run in NA 243 and 242, respectively. Malik Niaz Ahmad Jhakar of the PTI has been granted permission to run for election in NA 182 (Layyah).
Similarly, Hasnain Chohan, a PTI candidate from PS 113, was approved by the electoral tribunal to contest in the poll. Rauf, the candidate of the Pakistan Peoples Party
The electoral tribunal accepted Ahmad’s appeal against the RO’s decision to reject his nomination document. Independent candidates Rafiya Hassan (PS 126), Jamaluddin, and Deedar Ali’s appeals were also accepted by tribunals, and they were able to run in the February 8 elections.
Makhdoom Fazal, a PTI candidate from Haala, was awarded permission by the tribunal to run for election.
While finding the RO’s judgment null and invalid, a tribunal permitted Fiza Zeeshan to run for election from NA-237. Judge Adnanul Karim Memon of the Appellate Tribunal voiced his displeasure with the abilities of returning officials.
In passing remarks, the court stated, “Are the candidates being deliberately barred from contesting polls?” It appears that the returning officer rejected nomination papers in bulk for fun.”
He stated that no one could be prevented from running for office only because he was involved in legal proceedings. The Election Commission was also chastised by the judge. He then told the candidate to go prepare for the election.
Arbab Muhammad Memon, an independent candidate from NA 224, was permitted to run in the elections. The panel cleared PML-N candidate Riaz Ahmad for the PS 93 election. The PPP’s Rauf Ahmad’s appeal from PS 106 was approved.
