LAHORE– Maryam Nawaz, main organiser of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), stated on Saturday that she is not in support of prosecuting civilians in military tribunals and that the credibility of civilian courts should come first.
She told a gathering of religious experts that civilian courts had become contentious, and that they had become a vehicle for [appeasing] a political party. “How can we expect justice now?” she wondered.
She went on to declare that using religion for political ends was the worst crime, and that PTI head Imran Khan was constantly using the religion card.
Ms Nawaz said that foreign funds was used to boost Mr Khan, and that his party torched the nation in order to hold him responsible. “Now they are hiding when the time has come for true freedom,” she continued.
Mr Khan, according to the PML-N leader, was looking for proof of his party’s role in the 9/5 assaults, adding that how could Mr Khan forget the image of his nephew Hassan Niazi brandishing a baton with the Pakistan Army’s picture during the protest? “Get acquainted with PTI leader Dr Yasmin Rashid’s leaked audios and videos as well,” she continued.
She said that what the PTI did on May 9 was unprecedented in history. “Had Mr Khan been convicted in previous cases, the May 9 events would not have occurred,” she continued.
According to the PML-N leader, no one may be given bail while on detention, yet the Supreme Court awarded Mr Khan bail while he was on remand. “Look first at civilian courts before raising objections to army courts,” she continued.
“Judges complain that their orders are not being followed, but look at the orders you are issuing,” she said.
Ms Nawaz said that ex-CJP Asif Saeed Khosa [who disqualified former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif] pressed Mr Sharif to prolong his term, but Mr Sharif refused. “Someday, Mr Khosa will be brought to justice,” she continued.
She said that CJP Bandial had learned nothing from the past and that he was likewise following in the footsteps of Mr Khosa. “Former CJP Saqib Nisar could not face anyone,” she claimed, adding his son Najam Saqib was also “caught” selling PTI tickets “in black.” Nature has turned them into walking warning flags, she said.
