Hermann Winkler, vice president of the German Football Association (DFB), apologised on Monday for a social media post that made fun of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s weekend visit to Berlin.

On Sunday, Zelenskiy met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. During his visit, large areas of central Berlin were closed off for security reasons.

It was a part of a quick weekend trip of several important European allies to rally resources in advance of the anticipated launch of a significant Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russian soldiers who invaded his nation last year.

Road closures and other security measures were criticised by Winkler, who added that “at least the Soviet Memorial in Treptower Park is still standing for the time being.”
